This blog post discussed anything about Hormones and was written by renowned Menopause expert, naturopath and great friend of mine, Angela Counsel. I know you will grab some gems from what Angela has to share. She's helped me understand my body during my Menopause transition and turned my experience into one that is now pain-free. She really knows her stuff.

Let's dive in and understand more about our Hormones.

What Are Hormones?

Hormones are incredible messengers that deliver vital instructions to different parts of your body. They control growth, metabolism, reproduction, sleep, brain function, and much more.

Every cell in your body receives messages from hormones, directing them to perform specific functions. But what happens when some of your key hormones start to decline as you age?

The Role Of Hormones During Menopause.

During Menopause, women know that their reproductive hormones like oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone will decrease. However, it's important to understand that hormone changes don't mean your body is breaking down, although it may feel that way at times!

Your hormones act as protective messengers and as their levels change, you might need to adjust your diet and lifestyle to support your ongoing health and well-being.

Beyond their roles in reproduction, these are the key functions of your reproductive hormones:

Oestrogen:

  • Supports healthy bones
  • Promotes cardiovascular health
  • Maintains healthy skin
  • Enhances brain function

Progesterone:

  • Calms the nervous system
  • Supports a healthy digestive system
  • Controls appetite
  • Regulates body temperature
  • Reduces anxiety and depression

Testosterone:

  • Stimulates muscle mass development
  • Influences bone density
  • Maintains a healthy metabolism
  • Supports energy levels
  • Improves mood and cognitive function

While oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone often take the spotlight when discussing women's health, there are other important hormones to consider as you age. These include thyroid hormones (T4 and T3), insulin, melatonin, and renin-angiotensin hormone (RAT). They play significant roles in maintaining a healthy weight, managing blood pressure, ensuring restful sleep, and managing metabolism.

Your Overall Well-Being During Menopause.

Hormones play diverse roles in shaping physical characteristics and overall well-being. So, even though your hormone levels decline with age, it doesn't mean all is lost. While menopause brings physical changes and symptoms, it's crucial to remember that it doesn't mark the end of vitality and well-being.

There are proactive steps you can take to navigate this phase gracefully and improve your overall health. By adopting healthy habits and embracing a positive mindset, you can optimise your well-being during menopause and beyond.

Here are some tips:

  • Nourish your body:

- Eat a balanced and nutrient-rich diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
- Stay hydrated for optimal bodily functions.

  • Move your body regularly:

- Engage in regular exercise to maintain muscle mass, bone density, joint flexibility, cardiovascular health, mood, and weight management.
- Incorporate a combination of aerobic exercises, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Find activities you enjoy and make them a part of your routine.

  • Reduce exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals:

- Choose natural and organic personal care products, cleaning supplies, and household items.
- Opt for products free from parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances.
- Use glass or stainless steel containers for food storage and filter drinking water to reduce exposure to contaminants.

  • Manage stress:

- Practice stress management techniques like deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, or engaging in hobbies that bring you joy.
- Prioritise self-care and make time for relaxation and activities that nourish your mind and soul.

  • Change beliefs around aging and menopause:

- Shift your perspective to see menopause as an opportunity for self-discovery and personal growth.
- Surround yourself with supportive and positive influences
