Sun-Sational Swim Options for a Sun Safer You.

Anita McLachlan - 19th September 2023

It's Melanoma March. Stay sun safer in these sensational swimable styles + how to choose the right one for you.

Hey girls! How are you? Time to talk about Sun Protection. March is Melanoma month. A time to put this devastating disease in the spotlight. To change habits and focus on prevention. I am sure most of you have had 'sun spots' removed or know of someone who has had melanoma. Maybe that's you.

March is the month for major fundraising to find a cure for Melanoma with Melanoma Marches that you can donate and participate in, nationwide.

Time to cover up! In this Blog Post, I'll showcase different 'swimmable' style options for you so that you can work out the best cover-up options to suit your Sun Safer needs.

There are essentially 2 'swimmable' ways to cover up from the sun:

  • A swimsuit with built-in extra sun coverage
  • Layer over your bathers with a 'Rashie'

For our non-Aussie readers, Rashies are Rash Guards, are Rash Vests :)

Sun Safer options have come such a long way with many thoughtfully designed styles for you to choose from. BUT with so much choice, how do you decide which is the best option for you?

It comes down to priorities. Start to narrow down your options by considering:

1. Bust support
2. Coverage
3. Duration - how long you will be covering up for?

Then focus on FIT - styles that suit your shape and needs.

If you need a high level of bust support and sun coverage for a shorter duration, then your best option is to wear your supportive swimsuit under and a rashie over.

Good bust support with a high level of coverage for a longer period of time? Then a long-sleeved swimsuit could be a smarter way to go.

Rashies:
Wearing a Rashie over will give you the most flexibility. Remove it and put it on for as long as you need that extra sun protection. There are soooo many Rashie options out there now. Long sleeve. Short Sleeve. Wrap and the Rashie Dresses.

I've done quite a few Rashie-focused articles and live streams over the years. Talking about Fabric, UPF 50+ and other features that make Rashies sun safer.

One Piece Swimsuits with Extra Coverage:
It's a trend that has now become a staple style. One piece swimsuits that have Long Sleeves and Short Sleeves. And with that, higher backs and fronts for extra sun protection.

Not all are made from UPF-rated fabrics. The Scuba Suits are. The other options certainly offer more sun protection by virtue of the fact they cover your skin.

All are Zip-Ups for easier in and out. The shorter sleeves are easier to get in and out of than the longer sleeves. So again, it depends on what your priorities are. They offer good bust support with all options fitted with shelf bras. The nature of the Zip Front will push down on your bust to help you feel secure too. It's not a lift and separate style so please remember that.

For a B-E cup bust and in sizes 12-24 depending on the label and what stock we have left.

ALL of our Sun Safer one pieces and rashies can be found here, in the Sun Safer and Rashies section of our online store.

Maximum Sun Protection:
Aside from styles that will work best for you, how do you know if an item is offering adequate Sun Protection for your needs? Here are a few ways to know.

  • ARPANSA certified - in Australia ARPANSA is the government organisation that will test garments (including swimwear and rashies) for their UV protection. It's costly, so not all manufacturers go down this path. But if they do, then their garments will be ticketed with that certification. Buying online will be mentioned in the features. So if this is a high priority for you then look for that information and certification.
  • Fabric that is UPF Rated - the other (and more common) option is for manufacturers to use fabric that is impregnated or made from UPF 50+ fibres. Again, this is usually indicated on ticketing and online, as mentioned in the product description.
  • Fabric Weave - the tighter the weave, the higher the sun protection.
  • Colours - darker colours will absorb UV rays better than lighter colours.

In this LIVE I talk about these points in more detail if you'd like to know more.
