Why this video chat? Because awareness is an essential first step in detection and then if needed, treatment for this cancer that affects so many women.

1 in 7 women in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

You may not have your own breast cancer story, but I'm 100% sure that each and every one of you reading this will know someone who has. I lost my bestie to breast cancer 4 years ago. Nikki was 51.

Here's the most recent snapshot of breast cancer in Australia in 2023 (from the Breast Cancer Network Australia). Awareness is fundamental.

  • The risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer over a lifetime is 1 in 7 for women and 1 in 542 for men.
  • It is estimated that breast cancer will account for approximately 28 per cent of all new cancers in Australian women.
  • The chance of surviving at least five years (five year relative survival) has increased from 78 per cent in 1990-1994 to 92 per cent in 2014-2019.
  • Approximately 80 per cent of new cases of breast cancer are in women aged 50 or above.

Kylie, at the time of this interview was in the final stages of her treatment having had a breast removed. There is no family history of breast cancer in her family. She very bravely shares her story in the hope that it will encourage other women to be more breast cancer aware. She talks openly about the impacts the experience has had on her and her family as well as her hopes for the future.

Carmel Gamble is one of Brisbane's most respected and experienced breast care nurses. She was instrumental in establishing a dedicated breast screening and treatment program The Northside Breast Health Centre at St Vincent's Northside Private Hospital here in Brisbane.

So grab yourself a cuppa, get comfortable and listen to Kylie and Carmel talk breasts, breast cancer detection, cancer treatment and post treatment lifestyle. We also show and talk about bust prostheses and bust forms and how they fit into a swimsuit.

Carmel also mentions the Encore Program - a water based program for recovery and wellness.

And do check out the BCNA (Breast Cancer Network of Australia). They have many, many helpful information and resources.

There is much to learn and awareness is the essential first step.

Then get your breasts professionally checked. Be your own advocate.

Thanks ladies.
